You've put a lot of work into your lawn to make sure that it looks lush, green, and healthy. But there may be one thing that you haven't thought to do. That is to aerate your lawn. 

Aeration

Aerating your lawn is just a fancy way of saying poking holes in your lawn. Over time, thatch is going to build up on the lawn. It is made up of grass clippings, dead grass, new grass, and other detritus. The thatch is right at the base of your grass and can choke it off. Aerating can break that thatch up. But, that's not the only thing that aerating your lawn does. Over time, the soil in your lawn will compress, which will make it harder for your grass to get all the nutrients it needs. Aerating your lawn means poking holes in that compacted soil and opening up that compression. That lets air, fertilizer, and water get down to the roots of your grass, causing better root growth, which will give you healthier grass. How can you aerate your yard?

Manual Core Aerator

This is a tool that has a cylinder with spikes on it. The cylinder is on a piece of metal with handles on it, and it generally also has a foot bar. As you walk across your lawn, you push the aerator down. It will take some effort because the goal is to get the spikes into the dirt, where they can break it up and pull up a small plug of lawn. The foot bar is there for you to use if you run into a spot that is too hard for you to push down with just your hands; you can just step on the bar and penetrate the ground. 

Spike Aerator

These aerators come in a number of styles. One type is a plate that you can mount on your shoes that has spikes on the bottom of it. You put the plates on and then walk around your yard. As you walk, you leave little spike holes behind you. Unlike a core aerator that pulls small plugs out of your yard, the spike aerator doesn't. The holes will be smaller, but they will do the same thing that the cores do. This is probably a better option for a smaller lawn because otherwise, you have to do a lot of walking.
