A sprinkler system helps to water your yard, providing your grass and landscaping with the water it needs to thrive and survive. But a sprinkler system does not last forever. A head, valve or pipe may break or need repair, or your entire system may be failing. Unfortunately, many homeowners are unaware of the signs that their sprinkler system may be failing and they do not realize that repairs are needed until their yard floods or their grass dies. Here are a few of the signs that you should be on the lookout that indicate your sprinkler system may need a repair.

A Sprinkler is Sputtering

It is recommended that you turn your sprinklers on and then stand outside and look at them at least once every month or two. This allows you to see if you have any sprinkler heads that are not popping up, that may need to be cleaned or that are simply not working correctly. If you notice that you have a sprinkler head that seems to be turning on or off or sputtering as it sprays, the head may need to be replaced or you may have a problem with the pipe below the sprinkler. Either way, a repair is needed to ensure your landscaping gets the full amount of water that it needs.

You Notice Brown Spots in Your Yard

Another sign that you may be in need of sprinkler repair is brown spots in your yard. If you notice brown spots in your yard or dying plants, those areas are likely not getting the water that they need. This is a key sign that you are having sprinkler issues. If you fail to act in a timely manner, the problem can worsen or your landscaping may be unable to recover.

Your Water Bill is Increasing

The last sign that you are having sprinkler problems is the most challenging to pinpoint. If your water bill is suddenly increasing, you may be have a leak in your sprinkler system. Unfortunately, an increase in your water bill may also be indicative of a leak in your plumbing system as well. Many people shut off their sprinkler system and see if the problem persists. If it does, you know the problem is with your plumbing. If the water usage decreases when your sprinkler system is off, you know the problem is with the sprinkler system.

If you notice any of these signs, your sprinkler system may be in need of repair. A sprinkler repair company like Arbor Landscape and Sprinklers can help identify the problem and repair it before major problems, such as extensive lawn damage or yard flooding, occur.
