With winter coming in with a vengeance, it's time to turn your attention to your lawn. Winter weather can do a lot of damage to your lawn, especially if you're not prepared. However, with some special care and handling, your lawn can be ready to grow green and lush again as soon as spring arrives. Here are some simple care instructions that will help protect your lawn this winter.

Mow It One Last Time

Once your lawn goes dormant for the winter, there will be no need to mow it. However, you'll still need to give it one last go-over with the mower. As soon as you notice that growth has stopped, mow your lawn one last time for the winter. For this trip, you'll need to lower the blades one or two notches. Lowering the blades will reduce the length of your grass, which will help prevent damage during the cold weather. It will also ensure that your soil is able to get some air during the winter.

Apply New Seed

Once you've aerated your lawn, you'll want to apply new lawn seed. This reseeding will help fill in bald spots and perk up your existing lawn. Purchase a bag of winter blend lawn seed and apply to the entire surface of your lawn. Once you've applied the seed, use a rake to make sure that it's disbursed evenly. Water your lawn and then apply a layer of fertilizer to help keep the seed in place.

Give It Some Water

For the most part, your lawn won't need to be watered during the winter, However, if you live in a region that experiences drier weather, your lawn might not get much moisture during the winter. If it's been a while since the last rain, go ahead and give your lawn a few minutes of fresh water. Not only will the extra bit of water give your lawn some much-needed moisture, it will also help germinate your new lawn seed.

Reduce the Foot Traffic

During the winter, excessive foot traffic can ruin your lawn, especially if you've had freezing temperatures. To protect your lawn from winter damage, try to reduce the amount of foot traffic you have in your yard, especially in areas where there might have already been some damage prior to winter.
